During the fall I recommend netting the ponds to prevent excess leaf debris from building up in the pond. As dead leaves break down during the winter they can harm or kill your fish.

The net is not obvious or unsightly as you can see from the following photos. (There is a net over every pond in these pictures except for the first one, which shows how much, can build up in an open pond.)
